Philippians 3: 12-14
“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
When my daughter reminded me that the Winter Olympic Games will begin this Friday, I became so excited. For as long as I can remember, I have loved watching these elite athletes compete. I am in awe of the self- discipline and commitment it takes to achieve the physical readiness to compete on this level. The average Olympic athlete will train over 10,000 hours in the 4 years leading up to an Olympic competition.
According to Olympic athlete Jessica Ennis, “To be the best and stay at the top of your sport takes an incredible amount of effort and dedication…All the hard work will be worth it, though, to simply compete…to win a medal would just be a dream come true.”
I will never compete in the Olympic Games, and probably neither will you, but we are in a spiritual competition every day against a well-trained opponent, ready to take us out of the race. So what is your spiritual training routine?
Spending time every day in prayer and reading God’s Word is like a workout in a spiritual gym. The training of our spiritual muscles, allows us to have the strength and stamina to compete toe-to-toe with our greatest challenger, the devil.
Today, be sure to accomplish your spiritual workout. Make time to read the Bible and listen to the Holy Spirit, your heavenly personal trainer, as He instructs and encourages you too stay the course, so you can “strive toward the prize” of glorifying God.
