Why is change SO hard?

“Cast your burden on the Lordand he will sustain you; he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.” (55:22 ESV)

Why is change SO hard?

It is part of the human condition to be confused about change.  At times, we long for things to be different, yet when that hoped for change comes, we often find ourselves wishing we could go back to the way things were.  It is natural to grieve the loss of what is familiar, and I believe that it is God’s way of drawing us back to Him.

When we are comfortable and content, we often unintentionally begin to move our faith away from God and begin to place it in other things: friendships, activities, material things, etc..  We can so easily begin to construct idols out of the familiar. When these things are taken away from us, we find ourselves disoriented, stripped of our comfort, and vulnerable to new and unwanted feelings.  Our natural inclination is to run back towards what we “know”, to what is “safe”.

David often felt this way.  He writes of his longings to be in a place of physical and emotional safety.  He wanted to flee back to the comforts of a former time, but instead he  learned to turn toward God.

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.(139: 7-10 ESV)

So, don’t be discouraged when things change, and you don’t feel “normal” anymore.  Be encouraged that our God is UNCHANGING.  He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He has numbered the hairs on your head and written your name on the palm of His hand.

Today, if your feelings take you to a place of sadness and fear, let your mind take you to a place of reassurance that God has a plan for you in this season of change and trust in the knowledge that His plans are always good!

  1. This was great! Chang is always hard. I loved the part where you talk about how we want change and then don’t like it when it comes. I think God puts these dreams in our hearts but when they happen we get scared just like you said, we want to go back to what is familiar, but God planted to dream, he will help us adapt…grow into the change. We just need to trust him. With change comes the opportunity to grow as a person and spiritually!
