An Amphibious Life

2 Corinthians 1:12
“For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.”

To be in this world, yet not of this world- as Christians, we hear this command often, but do we really have a picture of what this means?

Evelyn Underhill put it this way, “for we are creatures of sense (flesh) and spirit, and must live an amphibious life.” Think about it, a frog, in order to survive and fulfill its purpose, must live both on land and in water. If it spends too much time in either, it will not not thrive. God intends our lives to be like this too.

Land to us is this world, driven by our flesh, directed by our senses. This is where we have been placed to carry out God’s Will, but if we only spend our time hopping from one fleshly activity to another, we will dehydrate and be useless in God’s Kingdom. Like a frog, we must spend an adequate amount of time in the water in order to be refreshed and refueled. For us, the “living water” of Jesus Christ, is our source of energy. Without time spent in connection to our Savior, we spend our lives as dry and shriveled beings, unable to carry out the purpose for which God created us.

Today, let’s pay attention to our spiritual hydration, allowing ourselves enough time in the presence of Jesus to be effective in our pursuit of living a life that glorifies God here on earth.
