Another rainy day in the forecast, and my first reaction is frustration. Why so much rain? It gets in the way of what I want to do. Now, I have to rearrange my plans to accomplish my list for today!
Notice the pronouns: I and my. Self is the complete focus of my feelings and my actions. I am just like the Israelites after God led them from bondage in Egypt, and even after He gave them the Promised Land. Time after time, they turned their focus from His faithful provision and began to worship at the altar of “self”.
We need to remind ourselves of what that got them: God’s justified wrath, “For my people have committed a double evil: they have abandoned me, the fountain of living water, and dig cisterns for themselves – cracked cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2: 1-13).
Today, let’s stop worshipping at the altar of ourselves and digging our own wells, because at the bottom there is only dry and cracked clay. Instead, let’s fill ourselves with the living water that pours out of God’s Word and the worship of Him, so that we may be well-springs of eternal life overflowing with God’s love, kindness, and compassion to a dry and thirsty land!
